Hatfield Cop The Double

Whitewebbs 0 – 3 Hatfield Town
Herts Senior County League - Premier Division

Even Torrential Rain Can't Stop The Blue Army From Shining

Hatfield Town finished the season with style and panache by beating the reigning League Champions by three goals to nil. It was a wet and windy night at Enfield, but the Town ignored the conditions and swept aside Whitewebbs to finish their glorious season on 73 points, claiming the title by a clear six points from Metropolitan Police Bushey.

Playing against the wind in the first half, Hatfield played great entertaining, free flowing football, and should have taken the lead on 35 minutes when Daniel Staples struck a free kick which screamed into the top corner of the net only for Jason Beck to be adjudged offside for interfering with play. As would be expected, Whitewebbs tried hard to unsettle The Town but great work by Gary Coley and his defence kept them at bay. In midfield Lewis Owen was outstanding with Martin Standen also dealing with everything that came his way. It was goalless at the interval.

With the wind at their back, Hatfield really turned on the style in the second half, and showed the large Hatfield following that they were worthy of the Championship. Only five minutes into the half, the ever alert Beck scored a magnificent goal, which really settled down the team and more fast flowing football was the order of the day. From Sam Lacey in goal to Lewis Field on the left it was a joy to behold. Quick clinical passing and the keeping of the their shape gave Whitewebbs no chance at all. Only good work by the home keeper kept the rampant Town at bay. Trevor Golder was at his aggressive best, Neil Doctor was breaking up everything that came his way and Lewis Owen was playing one of his best games in the blue shirt. With six minutes remaining the ever alert Field roared through to score a really great goal and with just one minute remaining the Mortgage Centre Man of the Match Lewis Owen scored with a great header.

The Championship shield was presented after the game by Cecil Hudson, Chairman of the Herts Senior County League. Both the First Team and the Reserves have won their respective Leagues with Metropolitan Police Bushey coming second in both instances after leading the way for the majority of the season in both leagues. What a great season for the Town. Trevor Lloyd said after the game "Of course I am delighted, but I must thank the hard work and assistance given by Andrew Prutton and the rest of the management team. We must now prepare though for the Spartan South Midlands League".
